I am really impressed with the performance of Oscar Jaenada as Cantinflas. The looks, the mannerisms, the character, and the sound of his voice. That did it for me. The voice. Having known how the real Cantinflas sounded, I was able to close my eyes for a moment and just listen to his voice. It felt as if he had never left. And by the voice I don’t mean the unique style of his speech but the tone of his voice. Identical.
I know the movie was made to resemble the filming style of those days but it was killing me the number of times in which the head of someone was cut off in a take.
As for the script of the movie, I would have liked to find more of Mario Moreno in it although I am sure this didn’t happen because we knew very little about the man behind the character. As Cantinflas used to say “Ahí está el detalle”. I do happen to know a little detail about him though: my father saw him losing more than fifty thousand dollars in like thirty minutes or so, while playing poker at a local casino with his son, while they were on a trip to Panama. “As if nothing!”
